This is an exceptionally well-proportioned Federal tilt top mahogany candle stand showing rare foot extensions. The top is a beautifully figured piece of crotch mahogany veneer.

When the table came to us, it had a number of serious problems. A leg had been incorrectly repaired, and veneer was lifting in some places and missing in others. The top had bleached out to the color of pine and an amateur had badly refinished the piece.

Creating a surface that has the elegant look and feel of an old finish is always a difficult challenge, but with a piece of this quality, the effort was well rewarded. The process required coloring in layers, making a transition from a light and more transparent center to darker and more opaque surrounding edges. This replicated the effects of years of wear and polishing. The restored table now has the look of one that aged gracefully.
