Rescued from a junk shop by my client, this American Empire pier table was constructed of white pine, overlaid with very fine book-matched Santo Domingo mahogany veneers. Mahogany of this kind and quality is no longer commercially available.

The restoration included making a missing veneered board located directly above the section in the base containing the mirror. The dimensions of this board, as well as the profile of a molding on its bottom edge, were revealed by the markings etched in the finish on the vertical pieces that framed it in the base. This missing board would have been veneered with book-matched mahogany. A similar replacement was located in our collection of period woods.

We also fabricated a missing board that protected the back of the mirror. Traditional tools were used to create the textured surface that the original had. This board was then colored to give it an aged appearance that blended it into the rest of the back.

The finished surfaces required removing several topcoats of old darkened finish. This revealed the more transparent original finish, exposing the cabinetmaker’s superb skill in laying out this beautiful rare veneer.
